Last month I was asked about my criteria when reviewing erotica. I do look at many of the same things I would look at in a full sized novel, but not quite in the same way. Erotic literature is short and to the point, like a snapshot, a snippet of a novel boiled down to emotion and sharp imagery. I don’t expect complex character development, but I do expect to identify with the individuals. Often there is no plot, but there should be a theme and a contained event. I still expect a beginning, a middle, and an end, although those can look very different then they would in a larger story. Most importantly I expect to be transported right into the action, to feel as if it were happening to me. When the story is done, I want to feel breathless, alive. Added points if I feel the urge to go find Sweetie and attack him mercilessly. Super added points if I can’t even finish the story before I have that urge!
This week I’ve got three to review. Eight actually if you take the last two stories as segments. That’s a whole lotta lovin’ to start out your summer right!
Sarah’s Chase – by Lacey Wolfe
Sarah has been abstinent for a year following her second divorce, and she’s ready to break that cycle. The neighborhood player, Chase, seems an ideal candidate for a no-strings-attached sexual encounter, but he’s twenty-eight to her forty-five. With all the young hotties lining up for his attentions, Sarah doubts Chase will be interested, but she takes a chance anyway. Chase sees right through Sarah’s “can you help me change a light bulb” ploy and the two get right down to business. This is a typical dom/sub encounter where Sarah does not resist her role. Blindfold and minimal spanking, but no real rough stuff. The lead in is well done, the sex scenes are nicely written although shorter and less descriptive than I would have liked. The dialogue between Sarah and Chase seems somewhat awkward at times, especially as the dom/sub relationship means Chase does most of the talking. Overall fun and enjoyable. Three stars.
Four Erotic Stories - by Klayton Frost
I was doubtful that four stories in seven pages would be anything good. I was so wrong. Klayton Frost again impressed me with writing so clean, images so vivid and compressed that he packed more into seven pages than most writers do in three hundred. A tender, passionate moment with a long-term couple, told from the man’s point-of-view, was the first story. The second story, a detailed shower masturbation that illustrates how dirty getting clean can be. The third a girl/girl awakening that expands one woman’s sexual views. Icing on the cake was a movie theater experience that will replay in your thoughts during your next cinema outing. Five stars.
Swallowing Secrets 1 – by Lexi Maxxwell
No surprise here, this book is all about blow-jobs. Even if that’s not your thing, you might find yourself looking at fellatio in a whole new light. Three stories of three women, and the promise of more to come in later volumes. Kirsty’s story was my favorite. After working late on a Friday night, Kirsty calls a car service and hops into the black SUV only to find that this is not the company’s limo service and the driver has mistaken her for a classy prostitute. Sexually frustrated with her on-the-rocks relationship, Kristy impulsively plays along and gets paid handsomely for giving the guy the blow job of his life. Imagine her shock when on Monday she walks in to find the new client manager in the office is her “John”. The second story, Celeste’s, was the only story I had some issues with. She loves her husband, but he’s happy with sex once or twice a week, while Celeste needs much, much more. She’s taken to cheating on him daily with a regular list of men, but while her body is satisfied, things with her marriage are bound to come to a head. It’s not the extramarital affairs that bothers me in this story, it’s Celeste’s deep empty sexual need that never seems satisfied. In my view, her sexual addiction crosses into pathology. Which makes me sad, not turned on. This may not bother others – so please take this criticism with a grain of salt! In the third story, Autumn is far from a virgin, but she and her boyfriend have held off on sex. She wants to make the first time with Sam special, so she takes the advice of her sister and hones her blow-job skills to great precision. Sam has never been so turned on, never had such a rocking orgasm, but will he continue to love Autumn once he realizes the extent of her experience? The stories are graphic and well written. Four stars.
