Blog

Karen Heard and Charmain Zimmerman Brackett both invited me to participate in a blog tag where we all answer questions regarding our current work-in-progress, then tag through to five other websites.  It’s kind of like a chain letter.  I suck at chain letters, so I let both Karen and Charmain know that this particular blog tag would just circle back to them.  Please visit their websites to check out the stories they are writing and click through to their five tagged blogs.

Here’s what’s on my laptop right now:

What is the working title of your book?

I’ve been calling it Elf’s Blood, but I’ve toyed with the idea of changing it.

A demon/elf hybrid child was born twenty years ago, and safely hidden by her mother among the humans.  The elves have hired my heroine (a demon) to find and return this offspring, dead or alive.  It’s like finding a needle in a haystack, but when Samantha finally discovers the despised hybrid, she has second thoughts about sending the girl to her death.

Demon Spawn would be a fitting title, but I’m worried that it sounds too dark.  Elf Spawn would be an accurate and rather ironic title, but I’m not sure it works.  I’d welcome any reader suggestions!

Where did the idea come from for the book?

The book is number three in my Imp series.  My main character has a Succubus for a sister, and I’d always toyed with the idea of one her seducing a neighboring elf and the ensuing political ramifications.

In my world, the elves have low fertility and birth rates, and practically worship their children.  Although I’ve been blessed with three children, many friends and co-workers have not been so lucky, and I’ve seen firsthand the measures a woman will take when she desperately wants a child.  Wouldn’t an elf woman do the same?  Adoption, artificial insemination, etc.?  But how could she get away with it in a society that would consider any child less than 100% elf to be an abomination?

What genre does your book fall under?

I publish under Urban Fantasy, although that’s probably a stretch since a lot of the settings are rural, and a big city doesn’t drive the tone of the books.  There is a lot of humor, even with the dark plot and the obvious amoral actions of my demon heroine.  There’s also romance, and quite a bit of hanky panky.  This third book in particular has a LOT of sex.  Can’t help it with a Succubus seeking asylum in my protagonist’s house!  So maybe Dark Rural Erotic Comedic Fantasy?  DRECF?

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Chris Hemsworth has got to play Wyatt.  Not a doubt in my mind!  For the angel, Gregory, I’d probably go with someone like Dwayne Johnson (The Rock).  He can do that wet-your-pants scary, then in a flash be sexy.  Sam, my demon heroine, is a tough one.  I need someone who can be crass and funny, but who can also be a bad-ass.  I’ve always thought Gina Carano would be perfect, but I’d need to see more of her acting to make sure she could handle the humor.  Possibly Milla Jovovich.   Sandra Bullock or Drew Barrymore could do the comedy, but I’m not sure they could pull off the bad-ass action stuff.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Find and return an elf/demon crossbreed, and Sam will get an angry demon off her back forever, but can she really turn the “abomination
